About Beyond: Our Story

Beyond began as a product of necessity. 16 years ago, in 1996, Scott Jones, our founder, created a fleece jacket for climbing and skiing in the Cascades of Oregon and Washington. Creating these perfect pieces, that suited his absolute needs for each activity, morphed into a business that became high end, custom made clothing by Beyond. It was a long road though. No one had created absolutely custom made, high end, outdoor clothing before. The designs, and production technology had to be invented from scratch.

Over the first 5 years, the system of customization was refined, so that you can now choose your color combinations, options, and a perfect fit, and have it delivered in a timely manner for a great price. In 1999 Scott coached the University of Oregon Crew, and with an elite team of designers, continued to refine the patterns, options, and customization. In the same year, he took an extended 'business' trip to Europe. Here, many, ideas stemmed from experiences in Chamonix, the Alps, and the Pyrenees. Once back in the states, the implementation of their sweat and tears became a reality.

Beyond increased its line of apparel, colors, and options, and people began to take notice. Backpacker Magazine was the first to recognize the significance of the Beyond product with its 2002 Editor's Choice Award. Many soon followed, with Climbing Magazine's "A" Grade of our new Cold Fusion Soft Shell. Since then Beyond has created tens of thousands of custom made jackets and pants for skiiers, hikers, climbers, Navy SEALS, SAR, and many, many, more.

In 2007, the system of customization was expanded to include long underwear, fleece, soft shell, Primaloft Synthetic Down, Waterproof / Breathable shells. Together, these new products create the Custom Layering System.

Every custom Beyond product is made in Seattle, WA.

In 2003 our Owner/Founder was awarded the Young Entrepreneur of the Year by the SBA for the good old US of A. Beating out technology stars of the future, the SBA recognized Scott Jones' insight and foresight regarding American Made Clothing, and Custom Made Clothing. Read the articles:
